Barbican Theatre

A sensitive lighting refurbishment for one of London’s most significant listed theatres.

The Barbican Theatre is one of the UK’s most recognisable performance venues, renowned for its striking Brutalist architecture and distinctive auditorium design. As part of a major lighting refurbishment, the venue required a complete transition from ageing tungsten and halogen lighting to an energy-efficient LED solution, without altering the visual character of the space or impacting the fabric of the Grade II listed building.

Working alongside the team at PTB, GDS delivered a bespoke lighting solution that retained the familiar warmth and atmosphere of the auditorium while introducing a modern, centralised lighting infrastructure designed for long-term reliability and simplified maintenance.

Preserving an architectural icon.

Modernising the auditorium presented a unique set of challenges. The building’s listed status and concrete construction made rewiring impractical, meaning the existing electrical infrastructure had to be retained throughout the project.

At the same time, every luminaire needed to replicate the appearance and behaviour of the original tungsten installation. From the brass wall lights and auditorium downlights to the circulation spaces surrounding the theatre, preserving the familiar aesthetic was just as important as improving efficiency.

The venue also presented an opportunity to enhance the audience experience by introducing lighting to the front row of the balcony, an area that had previously remained unlit.

A bespoke solution.

At the heart of the installation is the GDS Drive Hub system, using IPM technology to transmit both power and control over the building’s existing wiring. By eliminating the need for additional control cabling, the existing infrastructure could be retained, significantly reducing disruption within the listed building.

Across the auditorium, a combination of bespoke and standard GDS solutions was used to suit each application. Existing brass wall lights were retrofitted using custom IPM LED modules, while Puppis luminaires were integrated into the original downlight housings to preserve the appearance of the theatre.

Where entirely new lighting was required, GDS developed a custom luminaire inspired by our Starfield range. Mounted along the balcony front, the fixture incorporates asymmetric optics to provide even illumination across the front-row seating using the minimum number of luminaires.

Additional Altair pendants were introduced to illuminate the mid-stalls, replacing larger legacy fittings with a more discreet solution that reduced visual clutter while improving light distribution.

Outside the auditorium, GDS C35 Lamps provided a direct LED replacement within the existing decorative wall lights, maintaining the same warm dim-to-warm performance throughout the audience circulation areas.

Preserving audience experience.

A defining requirement of the project was recreating the familiar behaviour of tungsten lighting.

Every luminaire operates with GDS fade-to-warm technology, smoothly transitioning from 3000K to 1800K as levels are reduced. Combined with the precision of the IPM control system, this delivers the warm, natural dimming characteristics audiences expect while benefiting from the efficiency, reliability and longevity of modern LED technology.

The completed installation incorporates more than 560 GDS luminaires and lamps, all controlled via the powerful Drive Hub architecture.

The Barbican Theatre now benefits from a future-proof lighting infrastructure that respects the architectural significance of one of London’s most iconic performance spaces.

By retaining the original visual character of the auditorium while dramatically improving maintainability, efficiency and system flexibility, the project demonstrates how carefully considered lighting design can modernise a listed venue without compromising its identity.
